CHEROKEE MENTAL HEALTH INSTITUTE
POST-GRADUATE PSYCHIATRIC TRAINING PROGRAM
CHEROKEE, IOWA
Cherokee Mental Health Institute (MHI) has established the nation's first program providing psychiatric clinical and didactic training to Physician Assistants (PA) and clinical training to Psychiatric Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners (ARNP) (collectively, 'mid-levels"). The program's primary goal is to provide licensed mental health caretakers in rural, public and other underserved areas of Iowa, especially for the 68 out of 99 counties who have no psychiatrist.
Our program is one-year in duration, with didactic lectures and supervised rotations in adult and child/adolescent psychiatry, provided in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Trainees work full time with each of our five board certified psychiatrists. Additional clinical experiences and supervision are provided by a masters-specialty physician assistant, doctoral psychologist, and social workers. We provide an annual stipend up to $45,000, with fringe benefits of about $15,000, including malpractice, medical and dental insurance, life insurance, room and board, and 24 days paid-time-off per year. There are moonlighting opportunities available during training which can supplement income. For a physician assistant wishing to work in a mental health clinic, hospital, institution, or correctional facility in Iowa, we may be able to arrange for a training supplement to our stipend, with a one-year service pay-back agreement. Current physician assistant salaries in state employment are up to $88,400, with $24,200 fringe benefits.
